At the end of the Easter holidays we sent a small team of swimmers to Crawley LC Open Meet. The swimmers ranged from those with experience of LC racing to those who had not raced in a 50m pool before, so it was always going to be a mixed bag! This meet was an important step for many of the swimemrs as they will be racing Regionals LC and needed some racing to sharpen up and gain experience in the longer pool.
Joe, Katialin and Alice R were our experienced swimmers, and they duly delivered some solid swims. Katialin set times that were her best for 2 years in the 200m and 100m breaststroke, whilst Joe set PBs in the 50m breaststroke and 200m IM, and Alice beat her previous times in the 100m and 200m freestyle.
Claire had raced freestyle LC before, but never backstroke, which is a whole different ball game down a double length pool. She swam well, after the almost false start, and gained valuable experience in preparation for her first Regional Championships.
Yannik, Luke and Bradley were all racing LC for the first time, and despite finding it a bit of a challenge they all swam their way to great times across their events. Yannik achieved the Regional times (converted down to SC) in the 50m and 100m breaststroke and the 200m IM.
The other newbie was Larissa, and she pulled the short straw, qualifying for the 100m and 200m butterfly for her first long course swims. She paced through the races and definitely gained valuable experience!
In line with the new swimming pathway from British Swimming, this time of year is now going to be the long course season. Long course racing is going to become more common for us next season which does mean that you will have to travel further than normal for meets; Luton does not always have events at suitable times, and they are notoriously hard to get accepted into!
Congratulations to all of our Crawley swimmers, we look forward to seeing you in action again soon!
